I wanted to do something new and different and to try a new surface. So I thought about Turkish coffee for a new material and paper for a new surface. I chose the coffee because it is a middle eastern drink and it draws me back to my culture. Also for what it had in history as it was introduced in Turkey during the 16th century and was at the time not a common drink, and was rather frowned upon. During the 18th century, Sultan Selim banned the drinking of coffee and those who were caught drinking it were sentenced to death!
In those paintings, sometimes I mixed the coffee with oil pastel, to control the running material. At the end, I sprayed a fixative and added resin to add some texture.
